WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A caring community came together Saturday to support a family still mourning a community leader killed nearly a year ago.
Jamie Hahn died two days after a knife attack inside her home last April. Investigators say longtime family friend Jonathan Broyhill stabbed her repeatedly.
As that grim anniversary approaches, volunteers honored Hahn's memory at Saturday's "Hunger Day" event.
"It's an extremely infectious environment, and so I love being out here and working with everyone in the [Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation]," said volunteer Hannah Hoffman.
"And this Interfaith Food Shuttle is a hunger relief organization that does amazing things in the Triangle. And we feel that supporting them, we're supporting her values through our work," said Alexis Trost, with the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation.
Hahn's husband, Nation, was among those working Saturday's event.
"He's here with his parents, and Jamie's parents. It's a great way to just honor Jamie, to come out and serve," Trost said.
Organizers want the public to get involved with activities like "Hunger Day," dedicated to helping people in need.
"They can go to our website at jamiekirkhahnfoundation.org, and look for upcoming service opportunities. Or events or gatherings that we host," Trost said.
Organizers encourage future volunteers to come ready to get their hands dirty for a good cause -- while honoring a woman who tried hard to help others.
"Go out, give it a try, and you won't be able to stop doing it after that," Hoffman said.
