Duke wins back-to-back ACC Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Atlantic Coast Conference entered the season hoping to create a jolt for men's basketball, a flagship sport facing a dwindling count of March Madness bids in recent years.

"We just weren't performing at the level that anybody was satisfied with," ACC commissioner Jim Phillips told The Associated Press.

It looks like those efforts worked entering this week's ACC Tournament in Charlotte.

Duke arrives as the No. 1-ranked team in the AP Top 25 after a second straight one-loss run through the league. But the ACC overall has positioned itself to reclaim bids that had gone missing in the years since the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There's no question the league is elevated," Duke coach Jon Scheyer said after Saturday's win against rival North Carolina in the regular-season finale. "The metrics would tell you that, the number of teams we're going to get in the (NCAAs) would tell you that. And I think we've really been tested in different ways."

The ACC had a league-record nine NCAA bids in 2017 and 2018, but slid to five from 2022-24, then four as an 18-team league last year - the fewest since getting four in 2013 with just 12 schools. That coincided with a multi-year sideline overhaul headlined by retirements of Hall of Famers like UNC's Roy Williams (2021), Duke's Mike Krzyzewski (2022) and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim (2023).

Wake Forest outlasts Virginia Tech 95-89 in overtime

Wake Forest was a layup away from elimination Tuesday night.

But with the score tied at 75, Virginia Tech's Jailen Bedford missed a tip-in at the buzzer that would have won it for the Hokies.

In overtime, the 13th-seeded Demon Deacons (17-15) prevailed 95-89 and moved on to face fifth-seeded Clemson in a Wednesday matchup.

Myles Colvin led the Deacs with 18 points, but six other players also scored in double figures. Sebastian Akins scored 14 points, Tre'Von Spillers and reserve Mekhi Mason 13 each, and Juke Harris and reserves Nate Calmese and Cooper Schwieger all scored 10 apiece.

Harris had a tough shooting night for Wake, hitting just 3 of 18 shots from the field

Wake Forest (17-15) shot 51% (30 of 59), overcoming 36%-shooting (8 of 22) from 3-point range.

For the 12th-seeded Hokies (19-13), Ben Hammond led all scorers with 23 points. Bedford had 17, reserve Jaden Schutt 15, and Tobi Lawal 12 while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.

The Hokies (19-13) shot 41% (29 of 70) and, despite the loss, had a 45-28 lead in rebounding.

Colvin made a jump shot and a 3-pointer to start overtime for an 80-75 lead, and Wake Forest went on to lead for the rest of overtime.

Lawal threw down a dunk with 1:25 left to get the Hokies within 86-85 before Akins countered with a three-point play, and Virginia Tech never got closer.

Hammond made two foul shots with 47 seconds left in regulation to force a 75-all tie, and neither team scored until overtime. Wake Forest led 38-34 at halftime.

N.C. State learns opponent for Wolfpack's Wednesday opener

N.C. State learned on Tuesday afternoon who its first opponent will be in the ACC Tournament.

The Wolfpack will face 15th-seeded Pitt, which beat No. 10 seed Stanford in dramatic fashion, 64-63.

Seventh-seeded N.C. State will meet the Panthers at noon on Wednesday. The Wolfpack beat the Panthers 81-72 in Pittsburgh on Jan. 24 in their only regular-season meeting.

The Panthers won when Damarco Minor followed his own miss to score with 0.7 seconds left and give Pitt the win.

Minor finished just 2-of-10 shooting, missing all seven of his 3-point attempts, but sent the Panthers (13-19) into the second round.

After Ebuka Okorie gave Stanford the lead on a three-point play with 26.2 seconds remaining, Minor missed a 3-pointer, but the Panthers came up with the ball after a scramble. Minor missed a short jumper in the paint but put in the game-winner.

Okorie, coming in as the nation's second-leading freshman scorer at 23.1 points per game, finished with 14 for Stanford (20-12). Benny Gealer scored 11 points and AJ Rohosy had 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.

There were 11 lead changes and four ties, with Pitt prevailing on the strength of a 20-7 advantage on the offensive boards, outscoring Stanford 25-7 in second-chance points and by 12 in the paint.

Pitt broke a tie by scoring the final eight points of the first half for a 31-23 lead. Stanford rallied to take a lead five times in the second half.

The Cardinal had beaten the Panthers 75-67 on Feb. 25 at home to start a four-game win streak heading into the tournament.

Duke's Caleb Foster out indefinitely with foot injury

Duke starting guard Caleb Foster has a fractured right foot and will be out indefinitely.

Duke coach Jon Scheyer announced that Foster underwent surgery Sunday, adding that the junior will miss "foreseeable" time.

Scheyer would not rule out Foster for the rest of the season but acknowledged that the top-ranked Blue Devils would have to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament for him to return.

"In his mind and our mind, we'll do everything we possibly can with our mindset to continue to advance where we can give him a shot to come back when it's all said and done," Scheyer said Tuesday.

Duke will also be without injured center Patrick Ngongba II, who is dealing with foot soreness, for this week's ACC tournament. Scheyer said he hoped Ngongba would return healthy for the NCAA tournament.
