DOT brings crews from eastern NC to help clear icy roads
Will Neil has been logging long hours these last few days helping to keep drivers stay safe. He works for one of the subcontractors that DOT has hired to help clear roads.
"I'm (on) two hours of sleep since Saturday," he said.
He was finally about to head home Monday night for some shut eye. He lives in Greensboro. The trip tonight will be a short one.
"(It's) our first night going home. We got to be back here (the Triangle). You got to drive two-and-a-half hours back here and to be here (by) 7:00 tomorrow. So I got to leave at 5:00 in the morning to come here." said Neil.
The DOT says other crews will be working the overnight and placing down rock salt on icy roads.
The focus Tuesday will be clearing subdivisions.
The DOT moved its own crews from eastern North Carolina to the Triangle to help with the work.
Spokesperson Kim Deaner is encouraging folks to wait as long as possible tomorrow morning for the temperatures to rise before heading out the door.
"We need to be very careful as we're driving," said Denaer. "As you're approaching bridges and overpasses, that's going to be one of the first places to refreeze (and) where you may find black ice. I think it's going to be somewhat dangerous to be out and about tomorrow morning."
ABC11 asked DOT about the possibility of another storm this upcoming weekend.
Deaner says crews right now are concentrating on getting roads clear and will monitor what's potentially coming down the pike.
