Durham leaders weigh water cuts as drought drags on

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- As Wake County prepares to roll out new water-use restrictions next week, Durham city staffers discussed the city's water situation amid ongoing drought conditions.

Durham Water told ABC11 on Friday afternoon is not planning on enacting water restrictions at this time, while keeping a close eye on "all things water."

Durham currently remains on a year-round, three-day outdoor watering schedule.

Despite the extreme drought, the city has an estimated 161 days of available water remaining in the Michie and Little River reservoirs.

Recent aerial footage from Chopper 11 showed Lake Michie's water level at roughly one foot below full capacity. Durham's other primary water source, the Little River Reservoir, is in more concerning shape -- sitting nearly five feet below capacity -- prompting increased conservation efforts across the city.

City officials emphasized the importance of following existing watering rules to protect the region's water supply.

Durham Water encourages residents to use water wisely by:

  • Following the year-round watering schedule
  • Finding and fixing all leaks
  • Replacing inefficient water fixtures (toilets, showerheads) with WaterSense labeled fixtures
  • Running dishwashers and washing machines with full loads
  • Turning off the water when you brush your teeth
  • Making sure sprinklers are watering the lawns and landscaping, not sidewalks and driveways
  • Planting drought tolerant and/or native trees and plants

Durham Outdoor Watering Rules

Durham's odd-even watering schedule remains in effect:

  • No watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • No outdoor watering on Mondays
  • Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Even-numbered addresses: Sunday, Wednesday, Friday

The development comes as neighboring Raleigh prepares to impose stricter water-use rules beginning next week. Officials in both cities stress that those who violate water restrictions could face penalties.
