Mother killed in Wayne County house fire, son escapes

WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A house fire in Wayne County killed a mother early Monday. However, her son manage to escape the burning mobile home.

Deputies in Wayne County say multiple departments responded to the fire call before dawn at the Bass Lake Mobile Home Park, which is between Mount Olive and Dudley.

Crews say the 12-year-old boy escaped the deadly blaze by climbing out a window. He was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

Investigators said they are still working to determine the cause of the fire, but they do not see anything to indicate it was suspicious in nature.
