It happened around 2:45 p.m. as officers responded to a burglary call.
Police said a suspect was also shot.
"It was like a frantic state of emergency, they were trying to move us as fast as they could," said Carlos Franklin, who lives nearby.
Police and state troopers provided a frenzied escort to the hospital as both the officer and the suspect were rushed to WakeMed.
The area remained taped off throughout the evening as police guarded the scene and the investigation continued into the night.
"There was like a lot of police around," said area resident Kayla Williams.
The Raleigh police officer is being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is in critical condition but is stable, police said Wednesday night.
Neither the officer nor the suspect has been identified.
