LOS ANGELES -- It was moving day Saturday for NASA space shuttle fuel tank ET-94 as it began to make its way from Marina del Rey to the California Science Center in Exposition Park.

The 66,000-pound tank started its journey through the streets of Los Angeles beginning at midnight, causing several road closures as crews navigated the orange space shuttle.

Here is a map of the route:

While the shuttle, which is three stories high, was on the move at about 3 to 5 mph through the first portion of the 16.5-mile trek, residents gathered behind to watch history make its way through their neighborhoods.

The trip was expected to take a total of 16 to 18 hours before the giant tank was to be reunited with the Space Shuttle Endeavour, similarly paraded in 2012.

Southern California Edison said customers would not be affected by the move.
