Pat McCrory makes new pitch for budget plan
Governor disappointed by Senate's rejection of budget bill

North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory continued his courtship of the state's teachers on Tuesday, as he reacted to the rejection of his spending plan by the Republican-led state Senate.

"I'm very disappointed that the state is not taking action," he said.

The plan to provide a raise for North Carolina's teachers and avoid elimination of some teacher assistant positions is part of a budget proposal okayed by the House. However, Senate leaders have said that the spending plan needs more work and must be balanced.

McCrory stopped short of criticizing Senate leadership directly, but said, "We shouldn't be playing parliamentary maneuvers to disallow senators from having a transparent vote on a very important issue."

Before leaving for an afternoon meeting with some educators, the governor told said "I'm going to talk about a good education policy my administration and, I might add, Thom Tillis recommended. I'm proud of Speaker Tillis and the steps he's taking to support teachers."
