PINETOPS, N.C. (WTVD) -- Two teenagers were injured in a shooting Friday at an Edgecombe County high school football game.
According to the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office, the incident happened during a football game between Tarboro High School and SouthWest Edgecombe High School. A person was able to get a weapon into the stadium despite security being in place, including weapons detection systems and metal detectors at the gate.
A 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were injured in the incident, ECSO said, and doctors are hopeful about their recovery. A person was taken into custody.
Both Edgecombe County Public Schools and ECSO are reviewing safety and security procedures after this shooting.
"We're facing a terrible situation right now with so much violence all across our state and across the nation. We're certainly not happy this has reached our community, and we all need to work together to stop this for the sake of us all - our families and neighbors. We have faith that we can," ECSO and the school district said in a joint release.
