School supply giveaways happening across the Triangle

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- With parents expected to spend an average of $875 to get kids back to school this year according to the National Retail Federation, ABC11 is closely following different back to school events that offer backpack or school supply giveaways.

On Monday, August 18 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Kestrel Heights Charter School in Durham is hosting a "Back to School" festival with school supply giveaways, inflatables, face painting and a uniform swap at 4700 South Alston Avenue in Durham.

Then, on Wednesday, August 20, the Durham Recue Mission is hosting a "Back to School" Community Party and Backpack Giveaway. The party starts at 12:00 p.m. at 1201 E Main Street in Durham. They're giving away groceries and clothing as well, and there will be a drawing for a Smart TV, two Nintendo Switches, three Chromebooks and 100 bikes.

Next, on Saturday, August 23rd, the Marbles Kids Museum is hosting a "Kick-Off to Kindergarten" for rising kindergarteners to practice going through a lunch line, learn about a typical school day, take a ride on a Wake County Public School bus and be a part of interactive story time. The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is free but registration is required.

Then, on Sunday, August 24, NC Throwdown presents the "Back To School Bash from 12:00-7:00 p.m. in the Ashley Furniture parking lot at 6180 Capital Blvd in Raleigh. They'll offer free backpacks, free haircuts and braiding, and a raffle, along with vendors, food trucks, and a bouncy house.
