Cary committee to focus on 5 key areas in review of state auditor's recommendations

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Cary Town Council subcommittee has begun reviewing recommendations from the North Carolina State Auditor's Office after a report outlined concerns about spending, oversight and council policies.

The three-member committee, which includes Mayor Harold Weinbrecht and council members Brittany Richards and Carrissa Kohn Johnson, held its first meeting Tuesday to discuss recommendations and determine next steps for implementation.

The subcommittee will focus on five areas: code of ethics, travel, training, benefits and compensation.

"We need to make absolutely sure that when we bring these recommendations and when the full council makes a decision on these, that there's a way to track to make sure that the council members are following policy, that we sat here for the work from this council subcommittee," Johnson said.

Johnson said the committee's goal is to increase transparency through any policies or recommendations it develops.

"The goal is also to make absolutely sure that the policy that we enact or the recommendations that we make in those decisions lead to a significant increase in transparency," Johnson said.

During Tuesday's meeting, committee members discussed ideas, research and possible approaches to the recommendations.

Once the committee completes its work, it will present recommendations to the full Town Council for consideration and a vote.

"I do believe that we'll probably have some instances where we have some options for them, and then they can we can discuss it as a group and they can also add their thoughts "s and ideas to make sure that those policies are as good as they can be," Johnson said.

The committee is scheduled to meet every Monday for the remainder of September.
