Car slams into tree, bursts into flames in Clayton

CLAYTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A car crashed into a tree and burst into flames early Thursday after a police pursuit that began late Wednesday night, according to Clayton police.

Officers said they began chasing the vehicle after spotting it inside town limits displaying dealer tags but no license plate. Police believe the car had been stolen from a dealership in the Garner area.

When officers attempted to pull the driver over, the vehicle sped away, leading to a pursuit that continued into Wake County.

The chase ended on East Garner Road when the driver lost control, hit a tree and the vehicle caught fire. The car quickly became fully engulfed, police said.

Clayton officers pulled the driver from the burning wreckage. The driver suffered serious injuries, including burns, and was taken to WakeMed for treatment. The vehicle was destroyed.

Police said charges are pending as warrants are being secured.
