DUNN, N.C. (WTVD) -- Dunn police Chief Cary Jackson has resigned, weeks after being placed on administrative leave with pay, Dunn City Manager Justin Hembree told ABC11 on Wednesday.
Jackson's resignation is effective Oct. 28, but she is taking earned leave that began Tuesday and runs through Oct. 28.
Hembree said he has appointed Maj. Nicholas Simmons, who was already serving as acting chief, as interim chief of police.
"We wish Chief Jackson the best in her future endeavors and are fortunate to have someone as qualified as Interim Chief Simmons to lead the Police Department," Hembree said.
The City of Dunn will immediately begin the search for its next top cop.
The city has not released why Jackson was placed on leave, but said it will "follow all applicable processes outlined in State laws and City personnel policies when an employee is placed on administrative leave."
