'Top 8 Crimes' down for first half of 2026 in Durham County, sheriff says
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Crime in Durham County has declined so far this year and local leaders and law enforcement officials say reducing violence remains a top priority.
Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead noted that for the first six months of 2026, what he called "Top 8 Crimes" decreased by 8.7% vs. the same period last year. Larcenies, including vehicle break-ins, also decreased by 12% after deputies reported a spike in April and May.
Deputies said they have made arrests in connection with a string of break-ins at Research Triangle Park.
Residents are also weighing in on efforts to improve public safety.
Aaron Williams, who moved to Durham from Rocky Mount, said crime is increasing across the state and supports additional resources for young people.
"It's about the same," Williams said.
City and county leaders are working together on a plan aimed at reducing homicides, shootings and hospitalizations by 10% each year. Williams said expanded youth programming could help address the issue.
"A lot of youth programs will help our youth out here because they don't get no guidance," Williams said. "We get more programs out here to help, I think the city will be a lot better."
As part of those efforts, leaders also want to hold a separate youth summit to develop strategies focused on reducing gun violence among young people.
The crime reductions reported so far this year come as officials continue to pursue long-term violence prevention initiatives throughout the community.
The sheriff's office got a handle on larceny cases in early May, announcing results of an arrest and ongoing investigation focused in and around the Research Triangle Park area.
"This most recent arrest was a direct result of the seamless collaboration between the Durham County Sheriff's Office and our fellow law enforcement partners in Cary, Raleigh, and throughout Wake County. By sharing intelligence and resources, we are sending a clear message that those who target our communities will be held accountable, no matter where they attempt to hide," Birkhead said at the time.
On Sunday, the sheriff added: "We remind the public to report any suspicious activity -- if you 'see something, say something' -- by calling 911 immediately or (919) 560-0900."
