Durham sees slight increase in violent crime, drop in property crime in early 2026

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham police report that violent crime increased slightly -- up 4.6% -- in the first quarter of 2026 compared to last year, while property crime dropped 6.1%.

From January 1 through March 31, the report tracks several measures, including violent crime, property crime, clearance rates, staffing levels, major arrests, and notable activity.

Property crimes still make up the vast majority (86.4%) of all Part 1 crime (violent and property), with larceny alone accounting for about 67%.

Domestic violence-related cases included 65 violent crimes and 28 property crimes, while juvenile offenses totaled 85 incidents, led by robbery and larceny.

Adult Misdemeanor Diversion Program

Durham Police's Adult Misdemeanor Diversion Program has enrolled 464 participants since 2015, with a 99% completion rate and just a 4% re-offense rate after a year. The program expanded to include adults up to age 26 and beyond at officer discretion and offers free services in English and Spanish.

Participants are connected to wrap-around services like mental health, employment, housing, and education, with 303 total referrals.

In early 2026, there was one new referral, and efforts are underway to reintroduce the program to new officers.
