Multiple people killed in Harnett County crash, authorities say

SANFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- Several people died in a crash Saturday morning in Harnett County, including two soldiers stationed at Fort Bragg.

ABC11 was at the scene in the 4600 block of NC Highway 87 near Sanford.

Around 4 a.m., first responders found a head-on collision blocking all lanes of the highway. Three people were trapped and needed extrication.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) said that a southbound Toyota passenger car crossed the center line and collided with a Chevrolet pickup.

Three people inside the Toyota were stationed at Fort Bragg. State troopers confirmed the driver, Spc. Romeo Mason Fleck, and a backseat passenger, Spc. Charles Jackson, were killed, while the front-seat passenger, Aydrian Larusch, was in critical condition at Womack Army Hospital. Fort Bragg said Tuesday that Larusch was currently "stable."

Authorities confirm that two killed in crash were stationed at Fort Bragg. A third is in critical condition.

Fleck, 22, from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was an Infantryman assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division since 2024, a Fort Bragg spokesperson told ABC11 on Tuesday.

Jackson, 21, was from Efland and was a Combat Medic assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division since 2024.

The Sanford resident driving the pickup, William Underwood, was also pronounced dead at the scene and had to be extricated from the vehicle. The Highway Patrol said Underwood was not wearing a seat belt.
