CARRBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- More than two months after Tropical Storm Chantal hit central North Carolina, some Carrboro residents are still recovering.

"It was terrible," Mercedes Terrell said.

Terrell lives in the Weatherhill Pointe neighborhood, where there was damage from floodwaters.

"Everything on the first floor was full of water, and we had to throw away all the furniture, basically everything," she said.

Terrell said she's still displaced, adding that it's sad to see the neighborhood like this.

"It looks like a ghost street right now," Terrell said.

The Carrboro Town Council met on Tuesday night to discuss Chantal's impacts and the current status of the recovery efforts.

"Our public works facility was underwater," Carrboro Mayor Barbara Foushee said. "We lost a lot of our town vehicles, and at least two of our neighborhoods were underwater."

Mayor Foushee said some of the things town leaders discussed include the lessons learned and how to better prepare for the future.

"Earlier response warnings are things that we're thinking about as a town, and certainly that residents are thinking about," Foushee said. "Most of the residents are in transition housing and just trying to figure out what they're going to do moving forward."

The town is still working with state and federal leaders for relief funding, according to Foushee.

"Right now, we're just on the initial phase of money that we got information about last night," Foushee said. "About $3 million in insurance proceeds will come to us through a budget amendment later, and also about $350,000 for our Public Works Department."
