Woman identified by family as victim of Southport mass shooting

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Southport family confirmed the identity of one victim in the mass shooting that happened over the weekend.

According to ABC affiliate WWAY, Lennie Rogers said his wife Joy Rogers, 64, died in the shooting Saturday night. The couple moved to the coast about a year ago from California. Both were at the American Fish Company when shots were fired.

In a statement obtained by WWAY, the Rogers family said:

"Joy was a devoted wife to her husband and a loving mother of three. Born and raised in California, she and her family moved to Southport just a year ago to enjoy their retirement. In that short time, she touched countless lives in her community. Joy loved Jesus deeply, and because of that, she loved others deeply. She lived up to her name-her spirit radiated joy, light, and kindness everywhere she went. Joy had a special gift for making people feel seen and welcomed. She was truly a vibrant part of the community and her family, and she will be dearly missed."

Two others were killed in the incident. Five others are still in the hospital.

The suspected shooter 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge is a decorated Marine veteran whose last duty assignment was at Camp Lejeune. He was shot in the head while serving in Iraq and is apparently suffering from PTSD.
