Brown University community in central NC reacts to mass shooting

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Brown University alumni and families across the Triangle are reacting to Saturday's mass shooting in Providence, where two people were killed, and nine were injured.

"We were just shocked and heartbroken," co-president of the Brown Alumni Club of the Triangle Melanie Jones said. "I am so very sad for all the students and the whole community."

The injured include a Durham Academy alumna, Kendall Turner, who was known as an "awesome student" who participated in track and field.

Durham Academy said seven of their alumni are enrolled at Brown University, including Turner. The other alumni were not injured, according to a school spokesperson.

ABC11 reached out to Turner's family, who said they are focusing on Kendall's recovery.

Kendall is in critical but stable condition.

The Durham Academy released a statement that says in part: "The community is rallying around Kendall, her classmates and her loved ones."

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics also released the following statement:

"Kendall attended NCSSM-Durham for a portion of her junior year of high school. We are saddened and shocked at the news that she was wounded and have reached out to her family with our wishes for a full recovery."

For the Brown University community in Durham, another family is coping with the trauma as well.

Alicia Hylton-Daniel said her daughter, Chloe, was barricaded in her dorm for hours as law enforcement responded to the shooting on Saturday.

Chloe reunited with her family on Sunday.

"We're still grieving," Hylton-Daniel said. "I can't focus much today. It's still very fresh."

As a parent, Hylton-Daniel said she's heartbroken for the community.

"I'm more concerned about the nightmare that these parents and these family members are feeling ... everyone that's impacted by this," Hylton-Daniel said. "I'm just wishing for the best possible outcome and hope that all goes well."
