Water restrictions move to another level in Rocky Mount due to prolonged drought

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WTVD) -- Rocky Mount is joining municipalities that are restricting water use due to the ongoing drought.

On Monday, the city implemented mandatory stage I water conservation measures. City leaders say the goal is to achieve a minimum 10 percent reduction in average daily water use to protect the water supply for essential needs. The Water Resources Department is recalling issued hydrant meters and suspending the issuance of new hydrant meters.

Stage 1 dos and don'ts

People who live in the city can irrigate lawns, shrubbery, and gardens no more than two times a week between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Irrigation can only be done with handheld devices, containers, drip irrigation systems, or automated sprinkler systems.

Customers located east of Wesleyan Boulevard (US-301 Bypass:

  • Wednesdays and Saturdays, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Customers located west of Wesleyan Boulevard (US-301 Bypass):

  • Thursdays and Sundays, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Customers with private irrigation wells are encouraged to follow the same conservation schedule.

Additional Restrictions

  • Washing vehicles at locations other than commercial car washes is prohibited.
  • Restaurants shall provide water only upon customer request.
  • Irrigation at City parks and other City-owned properties will be discontinued.
  • Spray grounds and City swimming pool operations will be discontinued.
  • Street sweeping operations will be suspended unless otherwise authorized.

Consequences

Violations of Mandatory Conservation Measures are subject to civil penalties, including warning notices, monetary penalties, and potential termination of water service for repeat violations.
