RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Commerce Department released its new consumer spending report and it shows annual inflation rose at its fastest pace in September in more than a year. The data finds consumer spending increased slightly.
Folks in the Triangle are trying to navigate the economy while also preparing for the holidays.
"It's tough," said Wilson resident Eric Richardson. "I don't think it's improving."
"Everything's more expensive," said Raleigh resident Annie Lang. "One of the reasons I'm going to Walmart is a product that I need is cheaper at Walmart."
In Raleigh, some business owners say spending seems to be holding steady among customers.
"(They're) willing to have maybe that second or third beer as they're having a dinner," said Trophy Owner Chris Powers, who opened his sixth location on Monday in Five Points.
Others tell me they are experiencing a shift.
Union Special Bakery Owner Andrew Ullon says on the wholesale side of his business, there has been growth, which is great, but inside his own restaurant, foot traffic has been down at times.
"Our restaurant has been a little bit slower this entire year," said Ullom. "That means across the board, we need to make sure and just be careful."
The University of Michigan also released findings from a consumer sentiment survey. It showed that people's feelings about the economy improved for the beginning of December.
