RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A new study reveals that many North Carolinians are concerned about their safety following high-profile violent crime incidents.

Elon University Poll surveyed 800 NC adults from Sept. 23 to Oct. 1, which is after the stabbing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light rail and the mass shooting at a waterfront bar in Southport.

Here's what the poll found:

  • 61% of participants felt unsafe in outdoor areas with large crowds
  • 59% felt unsafe on public transportation
  • 49% were concerned about safety in schools

When asked about specific cities:

  • 49% had safety concerns about Durham or Charlotte.
  • 42% about Winston-Salem.
  • 41% about Raleigh or Greensboro.

President Donald Trump has deployed the National Guide in some major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago and Memphis.

When North Carolinians were asked if they would support similar National Guard deployments, 47% opposed the idea, while 42% supported it.
