NCCU coach Levelle Moton hosts Back to School community day

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The first day of school is around the corner, and the cost of supplies can be a financial burden for many families across the Triangle.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) basketball coach Levelle Moton hosted his 16th Annual Back to School Community Day with Coastal Federal Credit Union.

Starr Jones and her children gathered school supplies like folders, pencils, and backpacks.

"We need it. The community does need it," said Jones.

Her son Romel is a rising second grader and a wiz with numbers, and is ready to learn.

"I grew up in this boys' club. It raised me and kept me off the street and allowed me to use my time wisely," said Levelle Moton.

Moton realized that so many families need financial relief

"Always give back. Always lend a helping hand to your neighbor. People always ask why I do so much. The answer is simple, so much was done for me," said Moton.

Kids were able to get free haircuts and food.

"You are also getting the definition of community and letting them know that people are supporting them. Letting their families know we are supporting them. There are businesses supporting them. We want them to leave with that type of support," said Creigh Blackwell, Coastal Credit Union.

It's even a full circle moment, Moton's children giving a helping hand.

"The community looks good. I think it's going well. I'm happy for my dad," said Brooke Moton and Levelle Moton Jr.

Organizers want to remove any barriers so all students can excel this school year.

"They are very happy. Grateful, my kids are very grateful," said Keyanna Martin.
