Search underway for suspect after pursuit ends in crash on US-70

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A suspect is in custody and another is still on the run following a two-county vehicle pursuit on Wednesday morning.

It began around 6:15 a.m. when a Wake County deputy tried to pull over a vehicle on I-540 East near Falls of Neuse Road. The car did not have a license plate displayed.

The driver initially stopped but then drove off, leading to a chase on I-540 to US-70 that ended 14 miles later when the driver crashed the car in a ditch near Sherron Road in Durham.

Two men jumped out of the car and ran away. Authorities said that the other passenger, a woman, remained in the vehicle and talked with police.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office said one person is in custody and they are still searching the second man.

ABC11 spoke with two men who saw how things ended as they were arriving to work early this morning.

"The guy hopping on one foot came out of the woods and made it onto this property for about 30 seconds. Jumped over the fence and started crossing the road with a stick."

An employee who wanted to remain anonymous at S&H Auto on Miami Boulevard said he was surprised this happened here.

"Typically, it's quiet beyond what's it called on 70 here. It's usually pretty quiet and it's relaxed. And this is the first that we've ever experienced something like this."

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office.
