Raleigh drought restrictions 'bit of a nightmare,' business owner says

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The City of Raleigh says inspectors are out in neighborhoods making sure people understand and follow the new watering rules.

Raleigh officials said a few complaints have been filed, and staffers are investigating whether residents are breaking the water restrictions.

Residents are being told to water between midnight and 10 a.m.

The changes are affecting some businesses.

Raleigh-based Hardison Landscaping said it has had to leave plants at a nursery much longer than normal because of the watering restrictions.

"Logistically, it's been a little bit of a nightmare," said Hardison Landscaping owner Leslie Hardison. "I'm hopeful that we'll get rain as we move through the season."

As for Raleigh's own usage, the city said major steps have been taken to curb usage.

An official said 28 million gallons have been saved this year by changing how pipes are flushed during annual chlorine conversion, and the city also recycles the majority of water at treatment plants.

The rules do not affect foundations and splash pads. The water is recirculated, and that's good news for families when the temperatures warm up.

"It's not summer yet, but it's good weather," said Knightdale resident Travis Fowles. "My children, they like to come out here. There's children out here now, and I think this would be a disadvantage if this were shut down."
