New cell phone policy in effect for Durham Public Schools students

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham Public Schools students are coming back from winter break with a new policy in effect that aims to improve student focus.

The new cell phone policy comes after several other school districts across the Triangle restricted cell phone and personal device usage on campus, aligning with a new state law.

DPS released the following statement on Monday:

"Research shows that students learn better when their attention is not distracted by digital devices. The current legislation supports our educational intent to ensure that all students are learning in an environment where uninterrupted learning is the priority."

Although there are exceptions to the policy, such as during emergencies, it's prompting some concern among students and parents.

"If my parents are checking in or if I need to know if we're doing something important ... then I can't use my phone," Kaitlyn Robinson said.

For Rochine Perkins, who just moved to the Bull City and is about to enroll his children in the school district, he said he understands how it can be a distraction in the classroom, but he has safety concerns.

"If something happens, I want to be able to get in touch with my child," Perkins said. "I understand the distractions, but safety ... what's happening in schools scares me."

Under the new DPS policy, middle and high school students can use their cell phones during lunchtime.

Other key points also include allowing cell phone use for communication, and students must request permission to use cell phones during instructional time for "reasonable and legitimate purposes."
