More than 100 acres of farmland donated to Coharie Tribe of North Carolina

Coharie Tribe honored with long-awaited symbol of state recognition

CLINTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- American food company Smithfield Foods has donated 103 acres of farmland to the Coharie Tribe.

The Coharie Tribe of North Carolina is a state-recognized Native American community descended from the Neusiok Indians with deep roots in Sampson County.

They preserve and celebrate their heritage through traditions like the Coharie Powwow.

This land donation was announced Saturday during the 55th Powwow in Clinton.

"As members of the Coharie Tribe, we feel humbly grateful for the recognition and land gift we recently received from Smithfield Foods," said Greg Jacobs, tribal administrator for the Coharie Tribe. "For many years, Smithfield has increased our opportunity for gainful employment. Our ancestors' visions are being fulfilled as we improve the quality of life for present and future generations, and we thank Smithfield for being a catalyst for the growth of our community."

According to a news release, this reflects Smithfield's commitment "to strengthening the communities where we live and work through meaningful investments and local partnerships."
