Smithfield man charged with pointing lasers at aircraft near airport

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Smithfield man is facing multiple felony charges after investigators say he pointed lasers at aircraft near the Johnston County Regional Airport.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office arrested 49-year-old Alexander Tyson Urtso on Wednesday.

Authorities say Urtso is accused of pointing lasers and high-beam lights at aircraft operating in the area.

Investigators say victims in the case include Duke Life Flight and the Johnston County Sheriff's Office.

Urtso is charged with eight felony counts of illegal use of a laser device.

The investigation remains ongoing.
