EDGECOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A barricaded subject investigation in Edgecombe County ended Friday with an deputy-involved shooting that left a suspect dead, according to authorities.

Deputies initially responded to a reported larceny at a residence in the 10000 block of N.C. 43 North between Rocky Mount and Pinetops.

According to the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office, deputies were confronted by the suspect after arriving at the scene. Authorities said the suspect aimed a rifle at a deputy, prompting the deputy to fire.

Investigators said the suspect then retreated into the home while still armed with the rifle. Deputies took cover outside as additional law enforcement officers responded to the area.

Members of the sheriff's office Special Response Team later entered the residence and found the suspect dead inside the home.

As is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been asked to conduct an independent investigation into the incident.

No deputies were reported injured.

Authorities have not released the names of those involved. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
