Top general Donahue expected to depart Pentagon

WASHINGTON (WTVD) -- Another top general is out at the Pentagon.

Gen. Chris Donahue is expected to announce his retirement as soon as Wednesday.

He has served for the past 18 months as commander of the U.S. Army in Europe and Africa.

Donahue's extensive resume includes command of the Army's elite Delta Force and of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.

"So why would you leave?" Donahue said in 2024, when he left his command at Fort Bragg, then known briefly as Fort Liberty. "Because the Army's an incredibly well-oiled machine. And it does one thing incredibly well, is it always finds a person better than you."

He is known for being the last American servicemember to leave Afghanistan during the 2021 withdrawal while commanding the 82nd Airborne.

Donahue's departure comes as Secretary of War Pete Hegseth continues his efforts to reshape senior Pentagon leadership.
