RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- ALS United estimates that over 5,600 people are diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the U.S. each year. That equals 15 new cases a day.
ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative condition that progressively affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, it robs individuals of the ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe. The disease can affect anyone, and the average life expectancy following diagnosis is two to five years.
While there is currently no cure, organizations and community members across North Carolina continue working to raise awareness and support those affected.
ABC11 extends an invitation each year to the community to join the station's Stogner Strong Team at the Triangle ALS Walk in honor of longtime colleague and friend Larry Stogner, who died from ALS in 2016.
This year's Triangle ALS Walk was on Saturday, April 25 at Halifax Mall (300 N. Salisbury St.) in downtown Raleigh.
Thank you all the participants who joined the Stogner Strong Team to help support efforts to raise awareness and critical funding for ALS research, patient care, and support services.
