RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Major travel disruptions continued across the United States as a powerful winter storm moved east, causing flight delays and cancellations that rippled through airports during the busy post-holiday travel period.
At Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), delays continued to climb throughout the day. According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, by 6:45 pm, more than 100 flights arriving at or departing from RDU were delayed, and at least eight flights were canceled.
Long lines wrapped around airport kiosks as travelers attempted to check in and print boarding passes, highlighting the strain on passengers trying to return home after the holidays.
The storm system has brought dangerous wind, snow, and ice to millions nationwide, creating a domino effect that has disrupted air travel far beyond the hardest-hit regions. For many travelers, the delays have led to added expenses and logistical challenges.
"It was frustrating," said Marcus Folkes, whose flight was delayed. "I had to wait to charge a car that took up a little out of my time. I was expecting to drop it off at a certain time, and now I went past that time. Then I had to charge the car because the battery went down. It was a bit of a setback for me."
Other passengers described hours-long waits and uncomfortable conditions. Sam Clifford, who was traveling to Detroit, said his flight was delayed for four hours.
"Four hours sitting out in the cold," Clifford said. "It's 50 degrees out."
For families, the delays added another layer of stress during an already busy travel season.
"It's a bit frustrating, especially if you're traveling with your family or young ones, which is common for the holiday season," said Sholka Aiyer. "You want to have the snacks and your energy planned out."
Airlines are urging travelers to monitor their flight status closely before heading to the airport and to prepare for continued delays as the winter weather system continues moving across the country.
