Woman shot in road-rage incident in Johnston County; man charged

SELMA, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Johnston County man is facing attempted murder charges after authorities say he opened fire on a woman's car during a road-rage incident.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. on Monday on Highway 39, about two miles north of Selma.

Investigators said a 43-year-old Kenly woman and 25-year-old Maurice Dashawn Thigpen were in separate vehicles when one driver suddenly braked, causing minor contact between the cars.

Both pulled over.

Deputies said Thigpen then got out of his vehicle armed with a gun.

The woman said she was feeling threatened, so she got back in her car and tried to drive away, and that's when, she said, Thigpen fired five shots into her car.

She was hit once in the hand but was able to drive herself to a hospital.

Thigpen, who has addresses in Selma and in Zebulon, was arrested after the sheriff's office used video from the woman's car-security cameras to review the incident.

The sheriff's office said the two people did not know each other.

He was charged with attempted first-degree murder and five counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied moving vehicle.

He was booked into the Johnston County Detention Center and held without bond.
