Virgil sworn-in as new Hoke County sheriff
Roderick Virgil was sworn-in as the new Hoke County sheriff on Friday.

HOKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A new sheriff was sworn-in Friday in Hoke County.

Roderick Cornelius Virgil is replacing Hubert Peterkin, who died unexpectedly during surgery nearly two weeks ago.

Virgil said he was honored to take over the position and is excited to serve the community

Commissioners held a ceremony at noon to officially make Virgil the sheriff.

Peterkin, 59, was first elected sheriff in 2002 and was elected for five terms.
