RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The Wake County Public School System has new safety procedures designed to keep students safe while getting on and off school buses this school year.
School leaders want to make sure there's another opportunity for drivers and riders to make vital safety checks.
Bus drivers will now use flashing lights, check traffic for safety, then deploy the crossing bar guard before opening the bus door. Students must wait for the bar to fully deploy, then look right and left for safety before leaving the bus stop.

And Wake County parents wondering where their children will catch the school bus later this month now have the information.
The school system says some bus routes have been consolidated and bus stops will be centrally located within neighborhoods.
Wake County bus drivers are scheduled to make 25,000 stops serving 171 schools.
The first day of school for Wake County is August 24.
