Durham cold case solved thanks to WCU students

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Durham cold case is solved thanks to students from Western Carolina University.

Back in August 2025, Durham police found a human bone near a creek along the Ellerbee Creek Trail near Acadia Street and West Club Boulevard.

In December, a group of forensic anthropology students and staff searched the woods for evidence.

The program's director found the remains of a person who had been missing since 2023.

An investigator with Durham police said, “Due to the assistance by everyone involved from WCU, we can bring closure to the family of the deceased, as well as clear a case.”

WCU students also helped recover human remains in Cherokee last year.
