Durham County detainee dies after being found unresponsive in cell

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A detainee at the Durham County Detention Center died Friday after being found unresponsive in his cell, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead said the individual was discovered unresponsive earlier in the evening and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Monday, the sheriff's office identified the man as 37-year-old Robert Harris, Jr., of Durham.

The North Carolina State Bureau (SBI) is investigating Harris' death.
