
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A detainee at the Durham County Detention Center died Friday after being found unresponsive in his cell, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead said the individual was discovered unresponsive earlier in the evening and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
The identity of the detainee has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Officials said the death remains under investigation. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been notified and will assist in the case.
