JOHNSTON COUNTY (WTVD) -- A driver was killed and his passenger injured in a two-car wreck on westbound Interstate 40 in Johnston County.

It happened Friday near Highway 210 (Exit 319) about 6 p.m. The wreck tied up traffic for about two hours.

The Highway Patrol said a car traveling westbound may have lost tread on a back tire, causing it to cross the median and overturned into the eastbound lanes, striking a car traveling east.

The driver of the westbound car died as a result. Troopers identified him as Chance Mizzell, 21, of Willow Spring.

Mizzell's passenger, identified as David Hines, 20, of Cary, was taken to WakeMed with non-life threatening injuries.

All five passengers of the other vehicle were hospitalized with what were described as non-life threatening injuries. Troopers did not immediately release their names.
