Officials said 33-year-old Franco Juan Sanchez of Durham was driving a 2002 Subaru Legacy north on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard when he attempted to take the exit to Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, but was going too fast and went off the road.

The vehicle went airborne, crossed multiple lanes, hit a concrete barrier wall and then landed on the U.S. 15-501 bypass/Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway extension.

Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Subaru - 24-year-old Edward Frye Mitchell III of Durham - was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Alcohol and speed were factors in the accident, according to investigators.

Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway was completely blocked off for several hours between University Drive and the 15-501 ramp while authorities worked to clear the scene.
