RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A Wake County woman appeared before a judge Wednesday charged with Habitual DWI.

Penny Seagroves could face 35 months behind bars if convicted.

Since 2001, Seagroves has been arrested on eight DWI charges throughout several counties in North Carolina including, Durham, Franklin, Granville, and Edgecombe counties, prosecutors said.

Seagroves hid her face from ABC 11's camera as she approached the judge. Wednesday, the district court judge advised Seagroves of her charges and asked her if she had an attorney.

Prosecutors decided to charge her with Habitual DWI after receiving information she was still driving under the influence.

"The other thing that really came forward that we now know that she intentionally for many years moved from county to county to try to avoid having to face responsibility for these driving while impaired charges," said Lorrin Freeman, Wake County district attorney. "It's important for us from a public safety standpoint for her to be taken back in custody, and give a judge another opportunity to look at those conditions of release."

Seagroves is in jail under a $50,000 bond. Her next court appearance is in Superior Court on May 23.
