RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- After a sunny, but coolish day today, temperatures will plummet quickly tonight, dropping into the upper 30s over most of the triangle by dawn Friday. Tonight with be a few degrees colder than last night, indicating that the coldest outlying areas, especially north and west of the Triangle will drop to near freezing with a touch of frost. So folks living in those areas should take protective measures on any vegetation vulnerable to a frost.

Surface high pressure over West Virginia tonight will slowly shift off the east coast over the weekend. While temperatures will moderate some tomorrow afternoon, the real warming will come over the weekend and continue well into next week.

The weather this weekend will be just about perfect for most, if not all Autumn outdoor activities. Daily highs will be in the low to middle 70s. Overnight lows will still be somewhat chilly, dropping to the low and middle 40s. So a sweatshirt or jacket will be needed by evening as we lose heating from the sun. This weather with sun, light wind, low humidity and warmer afternoons will also favor cleanup efforts over all of the southern Appalachians. Its a long way to full recovery in many areas, but at least the weather is cooperating.

In the long term, our dry stretch looks to continue through at least the middle of next week. 00z model guidance indicates that the cut-off trough over the Southwest will rejoin the main flow this weekend and speed east, but any moisture associated with this feature and subsequent surface cold front would likely stay well to the north of us. Otherwise, surface high pressure and clear skies looks to be the norm for us through much of next week, and a return to 80 possible Wednesday. A weak cold frontal passage Wednesday night drops temperatures a few degrees for Thursday, but overall, its still going to be several degrees warmer than normal.

Have a nice evening!
