Wake teacher suspended after shooting

FRANKLINTON According to a published report in the Franklinton Times, 44-year-old Dawn Perry met 18-year-old Jessica Perry in a parking lot at the Rocky Mount college on January 18.

The two women are not related. Authorities say the older Perry drove up to the school to see the girl.

Nash County investigators say the two women got into the 18-year-old's car, and that's when the older Perry allegedly pulled out a gun and told the teen to drive her to Louisburg.

During the drive, Dawn Perry told investigators she was fumbling with the gun and it went off, hitting Jessica Perry.

The 18-year-old was treated and released from a hospital. A relative told the Times that she's on crutches.

Dawn Perry is charged with first-degree kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. Before she was suspended, she was an instructor at Wake County's Longview School. It serves students with special needs.

Investigators aren't saying what prompted the incident, but expect the details to come out in court.

According to the Times, Dawn Perry was a basketball coach at Terrell Lane Middle School when the teen played there.
