Teen found not guilty in deacon murder

RALEIGH Latrell Latham was just 16 when he was arrested for the murder of 74-year-old Richard Brown. Prosecutors alleged Latham killed the man because he was trying to move up in his gang.

Brown was found shot to death in October, 2007 at a small building that housed the mailboxes for his north Raleigh apartment complex.

The only physical evidence that prosecutors had was a fingerprint on the mailbox building at The Tapers near New Hope Road. They also used the testimony of several teens who said Latham - who lived near the apartment complex - admitted to the killing.

There were no eyewitnesses, and they never found the gun used in the crime.

Defense attorneys called the testimony of the teens rumor and did not call any witnesses. Latham also didn't testify.
