UNC dumps clothing maker

CHAPEL HILL Chancellor Holden Thorp said he was making the decision after getting a recommendation from the university's Labor Code Advisory Committee.

He said the committee found that Russell Athletics was not complying with the university's labor code.

Russell Athletics makes officially approved and licensed clothing bearing the UNC logo. Its deal with the school expires March 31.

Thorp said UNC is committed to improving working conditions in factories producing UNC licensed goods. He also said that if Russell Athletics can document it is complying with the school's labor code, it could reapply for a new license after March 31, 2010.

Other universities that have recently decided to end their relationships with Russell because of the Honduras plant situation include Perdue, University of Miami, University of Wisconsin, Georgetown University and Rutgers University.
