Car crashes into creek, driver killed

ZEBULON North Carolina State Highway Patrol Officials tell Eyewitness News that 35-year-old Shirley Ann Pitt was heading south on Green Pace Road in Zebulon, when her car went off the road shortly after 5 a.m.

Authorities say she overcorrected, causing her car to crash through a bridge guardrail and become submerged in an eight foot creek.

Pitt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say speed was a factor, but it is not known if alcohol played a part in the crash. It is also not known if Pitt was wearing her seatbelt.

North Carolina Department of Transportation officials have since repaired the bridge that was damaged in the crash.
