Chapel Hill police investigate rape

CHAPEL HILL According to police, a 19 year-old woman said she was walking down Municipal Drive near Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. when a man grabbed her from behind. The woman said the suspect forced her into a car and raped her.

Following the rape, she said he dropped her off at the Chatham County line.

The woman was unable to give police a good physical description of her attacker because she said he was wearing a ski mask, dark clothing and gloves.

The teen, who police say is not a student, remained at the location where she was left until daylight. She said she took the bus back to her original destination Tuesday morning and reported the crime.

The alleged rape is the second sexual assault that has been reported in the Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. area this year. In February, another 19-year-old said she was sexually assaulted. She told police a suspect forced her behind a large dumpster at the Chapel Ridge Apartments off of Homestead Road. No vehicle was reported in the incident.

Just like the most recent victim, she was unable to provide a good physical description of her attacker but said he was wearing dark clothing. Police say she decided not to pursue an investigation of the crime.

Anyone with information about either can call the Chapel Hill Police Department at (919)968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 942-7515.
