At some point during the attack, Alston was also shot in the lower back.
Deputies say despite being shot, Alston was able to get to his own gun and he shot the intruder - killing him.
The dead man was later identified as 61-year-old Carlton Burgess. Deputies say Burgess had a longstanding drudge against Alston, and that was the apparent reason for the attack.
Alston was taken to the hospital where his condition is not known.
The investigation continues.
