Cumberland County deputies are investigating the alleged rape of a special needs student. The 13-year-old victim told Eyewitness News it happened between two portable classrooms at Douglas Byrd Middle School at 1616 Ireland Drive on September 15.

Because of a fire this summer, Douglas Byrd and Ireland Drive Middle Schools share a cafeteria. The victim says she was on a pathway between the schools when she was attacked by an adult male.

"He grabbed me and he yanked me towards the trailers and forced me to have sex with him," she recalled. "He told me if I told anyone he was going to kill me. And then when he saw people, he told me to put back my clothes on."

The girl reported the attack to her grandmother who took her to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where authorities were called.

"She had a real big bruise here. It was on her right side and a big bruise on her leg. I said 'You don't have gym, so why are you bruised?' and she told me 'Well, I fell down,'" said the victim's grandmother Gwendolyn Bard.

The grandmother eventually got the real story with more questions.

The victim says she doesn't know the suspect and hadn't seen him on campus in the past, but she got a pretty good description of him.

"He was like 5'3" or 5'2". He had a black hoody on with black and red Nikes and he had a mustache and he had a tattoo on his arm," she recalled.
