Campers on a small island on the Cape Fear River were rescued by emergency crews Sunday afternoon.

Three of the seven campers were trying to canoe from a small island back to the shore when their canoe overturned, causing them to lose their oars and other gear.

The three campers were not injured, but all seven people needed to be rescued because they lost their gear.

Emergency crews from North Chatham Fire Department, Moncure Fire Department, Apex Fire Department and Lee County responded.

Fire officials say you can normally walk across the river in that area of the Cape Fear River, but the water was too rough to walk across Sunday.

All seven campers were safely taken off the island with no injuries.
