More than 600,000 citations issued in 2010 highway campaigns

State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti announced Friday that state and local law enforcement officers across North Carolina issued 622,413 traffic and criminal citations during highway safety campaigns in 2010.

The totals include 16,096 driving while impaired arrests and 51,754 citations for safety belt and child passenger safety violations.

Officers also issued 174,250 speeding tickets and 6,485 recovered fugitives from justice.

Conti said, “These lifesaving campaigns educate our citizens on several key safety issues and prove effective in enforcing our traffic laws.”
